Animation News Dump: Disney is bringing back Hand Drawn Animation, Spiderverse 2 sneak peek, and Lightyear Trailer
We have a lot of great new things happening in the industry right now. One off which is probably the greatest piece of news to come out off Disney in forever. DISNEY IS BRINGING BACK 2D ANIMATION!!! I'm not making this up! You know, back when animation was made with paper and pencil instead of a model in the computer? Seriously, Disney sucks so its nice there doing something right for a change. We found out this information from legendary Disney animator Eric Goldberg, who was the Supervising animator (supervising animator is the animator who is in charge of a certain character) off the Genie, Phil from Hercules, Luis from Princess and the Frog, Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh, and even Moai's tattoos in Moana. He also co directed Pocahontas and two sequences from Fantasia 2000. He also supervised the animation a different segment in Fantasia 2000. This is what he had to say.
I’ve been campaigning for a long time to train up people in hand-drawn [animation], and, as the CG films became more and more popular, that idea became less and less important to the studio. But now we have an atmosphere and a group of people who recognize that’s part of the legacy here, and to actually have content that requires hand-drawn animation is absolutely great. Thank goodness we have people who can do both here, but to actually commit to training up a new generation is a wonderful thing and I think perfectly appropriate for [us].
But here is the exciting part!!! Eric Goldberg also said that there are 2d animated MOVIES in development as well as tv shows!!! Disney hasn't made a 2d film since Winnie the Pooh, which was11 years ago!!! 11 YEARS!!!! This is like the best news in the world. I was talking to a friend of mine earlier today and we where talking about how its just to good to be true. I also heard that there going to try a variety off different styles in 2d animation!!! This is just the best news!!!!!!
Also in the animation world, Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse (not a part one anymore) was delayed a year. Now it sits at a June 2, 2023 release and its sequel a year later on March 29, 2024. This was sad news. But just a few days later, Sony announced at CinemaCon the new titles of the films, the already mention Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse, and the third movie Spiderman: Beyond the Spiderverse (no longer across the Spiderverse part 2). So what's the big deal Julian, they just changed the names! Well that's not all! CinemaCon screened the first 15 minutes off Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse and we get a sneak peek on what those 15 minutes where from the people who saw it. It opens on Earth 65, we see the Gwen's Dad at home doing the dishes, about to tell his daughter that he has a lead in the Spider Woman case. Both Miles and Gwen's Dad are both Police Officers who are hunting down there own kids not knowing that well, there there own kids, who are both Spidermen (or women). When he is just about to tell her, he gets an alert that Adrian Tombs (the vulture) has taken hostages in the museum. This parts really funny. This Vulture because he's from a different universe is Italian, I'm not making this up! He also has armor described as similar to Wonder Women's golden flight suit in Wonder Women 1984. He confuses the cops cause they can't understand what he wants. Just as Gwen's Dad goes in to stop him, Gwen grabs him with her webs and pulls him back. Her and Vulture start fighting, but right when she's about to get killed, Spiderman 2099 from the post credit scene in the last movie jumps in just in time to save her. As they fight, Miguel says that he is mad at her for what happened with the collider in the first movie. Gwen obviously thinks this is weird cause she thought they saved it, but it did the opposite. Apparently they opened up a hole in the multiverse that people are crossing over. Miguel calls in for backup and in comes Spiderwoman Jessica Drew in a motorcycle. Oh also, she's pregnant. Yeah, they seem to throw a lot at you in the first 15 minutes. The fight ends up outside as Miguel and Vulture fight in the air. The battle disables a police helicopter but Gwen is able to slow it down with her webs, Miguel saves the pilots, and Jessica Drew slows the helicopter down before it hits the ground. After all off this is settled and the vulture is put in jail and the hostages are free, Gwen's Dad comes up behind her with a gun, and says she is under arrest for the murder of Peter Parker. Remember in the first movie, she said that "she couldn't save her friend, Peter Parker"? That's the one! There seems to be nothing else to make her Dad stop, so she takes of her mask. The Dad obviously taken a back, still tries to arrest her in tears, but Miguel puts him in a force field. After Jessica and Miguel have an argument on what to do with her, if she should come with them or not. They give her a wristband thing like the one we saw in the post credit scene of into the Spiderverse, and leave. SHEEEEEESH!!!!!
Cut to Miles universe where his parents are waiting for him at a parent teacher conference, Miles is late because he's Spiderman. A little Incredibles moment, where Miles is about to go into the room for his parent teacher conference, his roommate from the first movie, Ganke who knows his identity, reminds him he's still got his mask on. He makes it there and all his grades are great, but the B in Spanish upsets his Mom a little cause she's Puerto Rican and she takes that seriously. She only gets madder when she realizes its because Miles is late. His teacher then mentions that he could get into the finest schools in the world, Columbia University, because of his grades. Rio is a bit hesitant because Manhattan is to far. Miles really wants to go cause they have quantum researchers. There studying Dark Matter and they might be able to jump between dimensions which Mile's hopes so he can see the others again. Mile's Miles Tingle kicks in and goes to see what's up. The Dad also gets a report on his radio and has to go to. Most likely the same reason why Miles is gone. When they both leave the teacher says to Rio, Mile's Mom, "Your son is lying and I think you know it." SHEEEEEEESH!!!! This is a lot that happens in the first fifteen minutes of the movie!!! This only makes me more excited for it and slightly makes up for the delay. Oh and one more thing, here's the newest trailer for Lightyear for good measure.
Apparently, there will be over 240 characters in Across the Spiderverse!!! That's insane!! Three of them better be Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland's Spidermen!!!
