Underrated Review: Cats Don't Dance: A film that deserves the spotlight
For my first underrated animated movie review, I decided to review Cats Don't Dance. Julian, I've never heard of that movie in my life? Well, I wish you would know! Because it is absolutely fantastic.
It was made in the nineties at a studio called Turner Feature Animation, which was owned by Warner Bros, and this was there third film (and sadly there last and you'll see why). It was directed by Mark Dindal, a Disney veteran who did effects animation at Disney for over a decade and was asked by Turner to direct the film. He would later go back to Disney to direct The Empires New Groove and(unfortunately) Chicken Little. This is his directorial debut.
Lets start talking about the story. Its about a cat named Danny who goes to Hollywood to become a movie star in the 1930's, but realizes that animals don't big parts. I actually learned that this movie is a metaphor for people in Hollywood who don't get big roles and that is so cool how they do that in the story! The story is a lot like classic musical and I love that! I love musicals! Speaking of the music, it is fantastic! Its written by Randy Newman who also wrote the songs for the greatest franchise ever, Toy Story (Oh and Princess and the Frog theirs an underrated movie I should do next.) Anyway, story is great. Pacing is very good, and the humor is top notch. All the one liners and cartoony slapstick! Fantastic! 10/10 story.
The characters are the real stars of the show, especially Danny. He is so likeable! He is so optimistic, fun-loving, and is just so fun! His optimism in this situation that he's in is amazing and he really changes the people surrounded by him! To never give up and to keep trying! So really instead of the main character learning something, he changes the other characters. Sawyer is another cat and she is the complete opposite of Danny. She stopped trying to get a big role a long time ago. She's sarcastic, sassy, and Danny's voice of reason and I love her! Probably on off the best non animated Disney villain's of all time is Darla Dimple. Based of off child star Shirley Temple, Darla is the biggest child star in Hollywood and she makes herself out to be a sweetheart, but in reality, in two words, A BRAT! She is a fabulous villain and she will do anything to get her way. She's scares the heck out off me...I absolutely adore her!!! And she has this butler who's name is Max (voiced by director Mark Dindal) and he is like King Kong if he where a human. He barely ever speaks and just the presence off him is intimidating but very funny. I also love him! Those are the standout characters but the side characters are phenomenal as well. The characters make the story even better then it already was. 10/10 characters.
And last but certainly not least, the animation. The animation is gorgeous, fluid, crisp, and and just pure eye candy! The color palette they have is great! The animation also adds to the story as well! I was really impressed because a lot off the animators were fresh out off college! That's insane! If you seen the movie, you'd know what I'm talking about. This is honestly some off the best animation I've ever seen! 10/10 animation.
Overall, every movie Randy Newman's involved in is flawless. Please check this movie out! It is Amazing!
